The 4 Truths

January 5, 2017

If Don Miguel Ruiz can have his 4 Agreements, then I can have my 4 Truths. Why not, right? Here they are, in no particular order.

Most Of The Things People Worry About Never Come True

Years ago when I was working as a TV producer out in Los Angeles, I was good friends with a woman that I knew from the office. She was in her mid-30s, attractive, smart, engaging, and she had a great job, making around $80,000 a year. Despite ALL these obvious ‘perks’ - at least to me they were - one of her biggest worries was that one day she’d find herself living on the street without a cent to her name.

Now, could this actually happen? Sure, I suppose so - anything’s possible, right? - but, given her present circumstances, the many assets she had working in her favor, and the overall odds of such a drastic turn for the worst happening to any of us, is this nightmarish scenario really that likely to occur in her specific case?  Again, it could certainly go down - most people on the street probably never figured they’d end-up there either - but in her case, it’s pretty unlikely. Regardless, that didn’t stop her from worrying herself sick about it on more than one occasion.

While I would never advocate living in a state of blissful ignorance about some of the harsher realties of Life on planet Earth - homelessness and poverty certainly ranks right up there- chances are, the vast majority of us are probably NOT going to: die in a plane crash, get struck by lighting, be the victim of a violent crime, get attacked by a shark while swimming in the sea, or find ourselves on the street begging for spare change. Yes, by all means, do your best to steer clear of these very real threats to the best of your abilities, but don’t waste your precious time festering over something that’s admittedly pretty rare.

It’s Always NOW

This one gets a lot of play these days, which certainly doesn’t mean that it’s not true. Living in the present moment - the NOW - is more than merely one of the keys to living a peaceful, productive Life . . . it’s the only option going. There’s nothing else. See, sometimes having no choice in the matter at hand makes swallowing the pill a heck of a lot easier.

Think about this for a minute. Is there really such a thing as a Past or Future event, or are they both ‘Now’ moments that have either already taken place or have yet to happen? At first glance this might reek of petty semantics but when you break it down, it’s absolutely true. Right Now is all there ever has been and all there ever will be. Regardless of what your intellect says, it’s NOW all the time.

Wrapping your mind around this one can free you from anything negative that may have occurred in your past - which doesn’t exist - or any fears about what lies ahead in your future - which coincidentally, also doesn’t exist. So if there’s no such thing as the past or future, then why are you worried now? Enjoy this moment, no matter what form it takes. It’ll be over before you know it, and besides . . . it’s all you’ve got to work with anyway.

Talk Is Cheap

Words are powerful things, but unless they’re backed-up with action, that’s all they’ll ever be . . . just words. We’ve all had friends who seem to do nothing but prattle on endlessly about what they’re planning to do without ever accomplishing much. I’ve done this plenty of times in the past. I’d even be willing to bet that you’ve done it a few times yourself. And where has it ultimately gotten any of us? Nowhere . . . fast.

It’s also just as easy to feel ‘stuck’ by getting caught-up in the words of others; i.e. reading too many self-help books or spending a big hunk of your money by attending too many weekend seminars. Don’t misunderstand, I think the self-help genre can be - and is - immensely effective, one that carries tremendous value for millions of people all over the world. But at what point do you quit reading books and/or taking copious notes from the front row and just start doing?

The jury’s still out - so don’t quote me - but according to the latest discoveries in neuroscience, the only way to break the habit of chronic procrastination is to literally force yourself into taking action. Sooner or later your brain should re-wire itself as you magically transform into a literal Man/Woman Of Action where getting stuff done becomes your modus operandi.

You Don’t Attract What You Want, You Attract What You ARE

It’s really quite simple. If you want love in your Life, you need to be loving towards others. If you want to bring peace to the world, you’re going to have to become the embodiment of peace itself towards all those you encounter, especially the ones you aren’t terribly fond of. If you’re feeling a bit ‘lacking’ in the joy department, guess what? The only cure is to bring joy to everyone else around you.

You can harbor the deepest and most sincerely felt desires for love, peace and joy until the moon turns blue from cold, but until you begin to actually live from that space - as in giving it away to the world without ever wanting it back in return - you’ll always come up empty. Bottom line: You don’t attract what you want . . . you attract what you are. Try it if you don’t believe me . . . it works.

Show up.

Pay attention.

Be Yourself.
