Given the natural precariousness of Life itself and all the myriad uncertainties that threaten each living entity on planet Earth - whether human or not - I’m always deeply humbled whenever I stop and think about the many blessings I enjoy daily:
To start with, there’s the roof over my head.
The warm bed I snuggle into each night.
The ample supply of food/drink available to me whenever I want.
Good health.
Money in the bank.
The opportunity to work for pay.
My extensive education.
Clean air to breathe.
The opportunity to deepen my awareness through meditation.
Countless happy memories to reflect back on.
Plenty of time to enjoy lots of enriching leisure activities like reading, hiking, camping, traveling, attending the theater, yoga classes, etc.
A loving, generous, and supportive wife.
An equally loving, generous, and supportive family.
Good friends.
The immense joy our pets give us.
A safe community in which to live.
The freedom to express myself creatively.
The wide-open spaces that make this country so uniquely beautiful.
A feeling of purpose in my Life.
A feeling of hope for the future.
The continued pursuit of wisdom, knowledge, and compassion.
My sense of humor.
The list goes on and on . . .
Compared to most people, I’m definitely one of the fortunate few. I can’t even begin to wrap my mind around why some are born into this world with such deep pockets, while others can barely scrape together a few coins. And while the gap that divides the ‘haves’ from the ‘have nots’ widens ever more with each passing day - even in these prosperous United States - we Americans have so much more than the rest of Humanity . . . SO much, if only we’d catch ourselves more than just once a year to give thanks.
But it’s not enough just to give thanks. The world we live in needs more from you. You've gotta pay those blessings forward and be of service in some way. This helps give our lives the one thing that all the money in the world can't buy: Meaning.
Show up.
Pay attention.
Be Yourself.
