Window Onto The World

Most of us have been taught to believe that technology is the answer to humanity’s problems. But just examine the footprint left by the Industrial Era of the 19th century - mass pollution, overcrowded cities, miserable working conditions - or the Nuclear Era of the 20th - proliferation of deadly weapons; a power source that’s dirty, dangerous, and incredibly expensive - and you’ll see how these ‘advancements’ are often double-edged swords. In the Information Era of today, billions of people now have the world literally at their fingertips. And while this new power undoubtedly has its benefits, more often than not, it serves as yet another incessant distraction in an already distracted society. Whether our species has a future or not doesn’t depend on another ‘gee-whiz’ technology, but on whether we’re willing to cultivate a deeper relationship with our shared spiritual essence and the natural world around us. As philosopher J. Krishnamurti once said, “Understanding of the Self arises in watching yourself in relationship to people, ideas, and things; to trees, the earth . . . to the world all around you, and within you. Relationship is the mirror in which the true Self is revealed.”
