The Illusion Of Control
Acrylic and mixed media (molding paste, stones, and steel) on gesso panel, 30" x 36"
Humanity’s primary impulse is for self-preservation, or in other words, not dying. All other urges - food, sleep, sex, etc. - are secondary. And there’s no better way for humans to ensure their survival than by manipulating and controlling Nature itself. Impressive engineering feats, miraculous medical breakthroughs, and exciting technological advancements are all the ways in which we celebrate our imagined mastery over the world at large and over all the creatures with whom we share it with. These passing achievements make us feel safe and secure . . . like we’re not about to die. But security itself is an illusion, and illusions are lies. And all lies contribute to our continued ignorance, which in turn, causes suffering.
