Invasive Species
Acrylic on watercolor board, 20" x 30"
From a psychological perspective, the ocean represents humanity’s unconscious: an undulating universe, immense in scope and puzzling beyond measure. More humans have walked on the Moon than have visited its deepest canyons. Occupying 90% of Earth’s living space with vertical depths measured in miles, 88% of the ocean receives no sunlight. Swirling in these inky, airless depths lurk many strange creatures, the bulk of which have yet to be discovered. These ‘alien’ beings - whose anatomical designs and motivations are as foreign to us as anything imaginable from science fiction - continue to haunt and amaze. The sparsely populated zone near the surface represents only a small fraction of the enigmas that thrive in the frigid darkness below. Much like our own psyches, the ocean is an ancient frontier shrouded in mystery.
